Future City Competition

If you have wanted to generate interest in young students for engineering, but your presentations and handouts do not seem to retain the interest of the students, then you should get involved with the Future City Competition.

The Future City Competition is a national program that fosters an interest in engineering by incorporating the popular software SimCity 3000.  Louisiana is just one of 36 regions/cities participating in this year’s competition.

In the Future City Competition, seventh and eighth grade students design a city using the award winning software, SimCity 3000, write a 300-500 word essay, build a model of a section of their city using recyclable materials, and make a verbal presentation.  Engineering mentors are needed to assist area middle school students with understanding sound engineering judgment.  The mentors are advisors and provide input and technical assistance.

This year’s competition will be held in Lafayette, LA on January 23, 2004.  If you or an associate are interested in getting involved with exposing seventh and eighth grade students to engineering, contact co-chairs Ani Chitambar (504-310-5777; achitam@entergy.com) or Vernard Henley (504-280-6073; vhenley@uno.edu).
