William A. Wintz, Jr. Scholarship
Each
year, the LES Baton Rouge Chapter awards scholarships to
undergraduate
engineering students at LSU and Southern. The
scholarship is awarded at the E-Week Banquet and is
funded through the generosity of our members through
sponsorship of the Student
Function and Golf Tournament.
Our goal is to honor deserving engineering students and
encourage them to attain their PE license, and of
course, join LES.
This scholarship is in honor of
William A. Wintz, Jr., PE, RLS, who served a key role in
the Baton Rouge Chapter's Scholarship program
until his death on January 16, 1985.
He was a professor at LSU,
retiring in May, 1979 with a teaching career that
spanned 5 decades. He accidentally shot his
own left hand off with a shotgun around the age of 14.
He told me that the accident helped him realize
that he would have to make a living with his brains, not
just his hand. But he NEVER considered himself
handicapped, and anyone who saw him set up a transit or
"throw" a chain would had agreed. (Bert
Wintz)
