MathCounts
National Competition Link
MathCOUNTS is a national
math enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes
middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement
in every U.S. state and territory. The National Society of
Professional Engineers, the parent society of LES, is a Founding
Sponsor for this program.
The Baton Rouge Chapter
is proud to be the host site for the 2012 Louisiana Statewide Competition.
Any schools interested in competing in MathCounts can contact Gavin
Gautreau.
2012 Competition
Baton Rouge Regional MATHCOUNTS event is scheduled for Friday, February
3, 2012. The event will be held at the LTRC/TTEC Facility,
which is located at 4099 Gourrier Avenue (the south side of the
LSU campus). The event will run from approximately 8:00am to 1:30pm.
We look forward to a great event this year.
2008
Competition
The Baton Rouge Regional
& Statewide Competitions
were held at the Transportation Training
and Education Center
(TTEC) on the campus of Louisiana State University.
The top three local schools
advancing to the state competition were
Glasgow Middle, St. Jude the Apostle, and Catholic High Schools.
Bob Liang of Glasgow Middle was the top individual at the regional
competition.
The top students, first
through fourth, were David Zhang, Bob Liang, Yue Sha, and Joshua
Xu, respectively. Glasgow Middle School Coach, Ms. Joan Summerlin
was the top team coach. Zhang, Liang, and Sha attend Glasgow
Midddle in Baton Rouge, Joshua Xu attends Boyet Junior High in Slidell.
The First Lady of Louisiana,
Supriya Jindal, was a guest speaker at the Statewide
event. She noted her own Chemical Engineering background,
and the importance of math and engineering to the future of Louisiana.
She congratulated the students and teachers on their
efforts and assisted with the award presentation. The Louisiana
Engineering Society (LES) was honored to have her support for MATHCOUNTS.

2006 Competition
The Baton Rouge Regional
Competition was held at the Transportation Training and Education
Center (TTEC) on
the campus of Louisiana State University. Eighty "mathletes"
representing 11 schools from Baton Rouge and surrounding parishes.
Glasgow Elementary School,
coached by Claudia Allums, won the team competition with team members
Neal Wu, Devika Balachandran, Zesham Ahmed and Luci Li. Defending
MathCOUNTS national champion Neal Wu of Glagow Middle won the individual
championship.
Baton Rouge mathletes
Neal Wu and Devika Balachandran, and Coach Claudia Allums, along
with Lake Castle Middle of Madisionville mathletes Daniel Cooper
and Jacob Giffin, traveled to Washington D.C. to represent Louisiana
in the national competition. Neal Wu finished first overall
after the written exam portion of the competition. He finished
as a semifinalist, missing a chance to defend his national championship
by one question. The Lousiana team finished 18th out of 57
teams at nationals. Congratulations to the Louisiana team
for a strong showing.
